Sr. Kay Morrell, Ontario’s first accredited instructor in T’ai Chi Chih, is now offering courses in Kingston, Ontario. During seventeen years of teaching (in Toronto and Kingston), Sister has developed a reputation as a clear and patient instructor. Eight of Sister’s students have become accredited teachers, themselves.

In these classes, everyone starts as a Level One beginner, and makes their way through the subsequent levels at a pace suitable for them. Levels can be repeated, if you chose to do so. The time for the Level One class changes with each round. You can ask to be on the waiting list for the next round, and the schedule will be e-mailed to you, as soon as it is decided.

What is T’ai Chi Chih?

T’ai Chi Chih is a rhythmic, flowing, movement form. It is a modern application of ancient oriental teachings. Designed by Justin Stone, a Master of older forms, it offers similar benefits. The practical advantages of this new form are:

  • there are only 20 movements

  • the movements can be done in any order

  • it is easily and quickly learned

  • little space is required, so it can be done at home or at work, inside and outside

  • no special clothing or equipment is needed

  • for an extra-relaxing change of pace, it can be done with music.

Regular users report benefits such as:

  • improved physical and emotional state

  • increased energy and endurance

  • weight and blood pressure control

  • serenity in the midst of activity

  • insight into puzzling matters

  • improved performance in sports or music

  • better sleep

  • general health maintenance.

T’ai Chi Chih is a pleasing experience alone or in a circle with others; therefore, it is also referred to as, “Joy Thru Movement”. The Advanced Level is called, “Seijaku“, which is Japanese for, “Serenity in the Midst of Activity”.

Sr. Kay also teaches “Kinkou“, an experimental connected form, which is an alternative system for those who especially like moving and enjoy a challenge. This form has movements learned in T’ai Chi Chih, plus others, and can improve strength, balance and flow. It is fun to do with many types of music. Remember, however, that it is experimental form, and should not replace the daily use of T’ai Chi Chih. The Basic T’ai Chi Chih course is a pre-requisite.

In Combined Program (**) classes, each lesson of Level One is followed by a creative art activity. This combination can be helpful to persons with fibromyalgia. The art time gives them a chance to rest a bit before leaving, plus an additional gentle workout for their hands. Sister Kay is a professional Art Therapist.

(Note: Art Therapy programs and Spiritual Journey programs with Sr. Kay Morrell are also listed on this website.)

Is T’ai Chi Chih the same as T’ai Chi?

No! T’ai Chi Chih is a different form; but if you have already taken some type of T’ai Chi, you will be familiar with the slow, balanced, rhythmic way of moving that makes T’ai Chi Chih so energizing. Many people who tried and left off other programs have found this new form is “just right” for them. It has the added advantage of taking very little space. You can do it inside or outside, at home, at work, or while travelling.

Who can join the classes?

The T’ai Chi Chih programs are open to persons 16 and over. Participants need to be able to attend regularly and to commit to practising 20 minutes a day. If they pace themselves, persons with arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, back problems and osteoporosis will find the program helpful. It can be part of preparation for and recovery from surgery. It is gentle enough for many who have a heart condition or asthma. If, however, you have a medical problem, it is always wise to check with your physician before starting.

The course is divided into 6 Levels of 6 or 7 weeks each. Each level is a pre-requisite for the others. You may spend as long at each level as you wish. Sister Kay will check to ensure you are comfortable with moving on.
