A call went out last year to knitters at Providence Motherhouse and elsewhere in Kingston as part of the One Hat, One Heart campaign organized by the Seeds of Light Foundation.
Sister of Providence Kay Morrell helped organize a local event last June during the congregation’s 150th anniversary year. At that time during a ceremony at Providence Motherhouse, 209 knitted hats/toques and $500 in donations were collected for orphaned and vulnerable children living in South Africa.
Becky Harmon, Director of Seeds of Light, hand delivered the hats this July during a colder than normal winter in South Africa. The hats were given to Funjwa Primary School with assistance from school Principal Daphney Mhaule. Each hat contained a tag with a personal message.
In all, 50 people helped make the project a huge success. Among them were Sisters and students in Sr. Kay’s T’ai Chi Chih and Art Therapy classes.
