Sister Mary Alice Carey

Rose Carey
1866 - 1954

Sister Mary Alice died Sunday night August 1st, 1954 at the House of Providence, after an illness of about eight years.

Rose Helen Carey, as she was formerly known, was born in Railton, Ontario. She entered the Providence Novitiate on May 29, 1902 and was professed June 23, 1904. She had thus completed her fiftieth anniversary as a member of the Community. A private celebration of her jubilee was held at the House of Providence on the 23rd.

With the exception of the years she spent as local Superior of St. Michael’s Convent, Belleville, and St. John’s Convent, Perth, all her religious life was passed in Kingston. Her duties were mainly with the sick, and she had charge of the pharmacy, etc.

Endowed with many sterling qualities which were nurtured by a good home training and education, she proved a valued member of the Community. It was during her last long illness, when crippled and bed-ridden that she was put to the real test, but was not found wanting. She bore her sufferings patiently, never complaining, and her endurance and self immolation were most edifying.

Her brother, Father R. Carey and the sisters, Miss May Carey and Mrs. Patterson, survive.

The funeral was held from the House of Providence. Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rt. Reverend Msgr. Byrne in Our Mother of Sorrows’ Chapel. There were seventeen priests in attendance at the Mass. Burial was in St. Mary’s cemetery. Father Ainslie recited the prayers at the graveside. May her soul rest in peace!
